About Us

About the Children's Mercy Cancer Center Auxiliary 

Founded in 1987, the Children's Mercy Cancer Center Auxiliary provides financial and volunteer support to address the needs of children with cancer and blood disorders and their families at Children’s Mercy. Funds raised support breakthrough research while also providing resources for parents and families of patients seen in the Children's Mercy Cancer Center.

Current Research Projects Funded

  • Initiate the use of ultrasound for early detection of complications following stem cell transplant in pediatric patients.
  • Study the high frequency of childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in the young Hispanic population.
  • Study parent satisfaction to better understand parents' needs and concerns during the outpatient stem cell transplant experience.
  • Collaborate with the Center for Pediatric Genomic Medicine and the Experimental Therapeutics department to analyze and better understand the genetic causes of pediatric cancer and blood disorders.

Current Patient and Family Support Funded

  • Fund salaries for two staff psychologists to improve the well-being of patients.
  • Sponsor a Parent-to-Parent Program to provide emotional and informational support to families as well as two inpatient parent rooms that provide privacy to caregivers.
  • Offer a specialized inpatient area as well as outpatient activities to support teenage patients.
  • Provide a dedicated exercise and physical therapy area to better accommodate inpatient needs.
  • Supply families with new patient diagnosis journals to document their child’s progress and treatment.
  • Support the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Bucks Incentive Program to motivate patients to meet required self-care tasks.

About the KC Cares for Kids Walk Committee

The KC Cares for Kids Walk Committee is excited to host this year’s walk for Children’s Mercy patients, families, friends and the community. This year’s committee includes Children’s Mercy staff, grateful parents and family members as well as many other friends of the hospital, all working to make a difference in the lives of our pediatric cancer and blood disorder patients.
